Author Talks
Deborah Thawley

We are proud to present Deborah Thawley at 5pm, Monday 15 March.

In 2009, Deborah wowed library members and guests with her thoughts on reading and books in America. This year, entitled A shelf of books on America: my choice of 51, she will speak about the books that have 'revealed' America to her. Deborah, who lives in the U.S, is a linguist with an interest in cross cultural communications. Her book reviews are published on the Athenaeum Library website.

Jean Lombard

We are proud to present Jean Lombard, author of An Irish Woman in Czarist Russia, at 1pm, Tuesday 16 March.

Jean will talk about her biography of Kathleen ffrench, the headstrong child of an Irish diplomat and a Russian heiress who grew up in her family's estates by the Volga and her father's castle in Galway. It is a fascinating tale of barons and princesses, the 1917 Russian Revolution, the brutality of Bolshevik prisons and Eastern Siberia. Jean's book will be available for purchase and signing after the talk.

Basics of Book Collecting

We are thrilled to present another session with Kay and Jonathan, but we must encourage people to book early as these are very popular on Wednesday 17 March 6-8pm.

Are you a book collector or a collector of books? Can vintage comics be as valuable as a first edition of James Joyce's Ulysses? What are fhe four salient points in book collecting? Is there a guide to first editions? What is the meaning of books terms such as 'foxing', 'first thus', 'cropped', 'shaved' and 'sophisticated'? Discover the answers to these and other questions in this interactive session with antiquarian booksellers Kay Craddock and Jonathan Burdon.

Cost: $20 non-members / $15 members and concessions, includes glass of wine and light refreshments. Prepayment at booking preferred.

Please advertise this event at your school or work place. You can download the poster here (pdf 359 Kb).
