CHAPTER BOOK WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY 6TH AUGUST 10.15AM - 1.15PM.

Ever wanted to write a chapter book for children? Here's your chance. Alison Reynolds, a multi published children's author gives the goss, the hints and shares her skills, including how to come up with ideas. Come to this friendly workshop prepared to write, and take away an outline of a chapter book. Book making classes - Books that Flip, Flop and Fold

Book making classes for 2008! Join us at the Melbourne Athenaeum Library, to learn a variety of methods for designing and making your own books. Class offerings will explore traditional book structures (great for photo albums and journals) and sculptural, alternative book formats. Express your personal style by bringing collage materials, embellishments and imagery to incorporate into your book. All classes will include a variety of models and detailed notes. Classes are suited to all skill levels and are held at the Athenaeum Library, Level 1, 188 Collins Street, Melbourne. Supples and tools provided.

 The 'Ultra' Concertina Book Tuesday 24th June 10am - 2pm

Make your own 'ultra' concertina book! Learn simple and effective pop up and paper engineering techniques that will transform your basic concertina book into an intriguing, sculptural structure. By combining these methods, you'll quickly discover how to interpet the conceertina book into an endless variety of shapes and forms. You will complete one book in this class. Class is limited to 10 participants. Bring a bag lunch.

Coptic Stitch Book Saturday 20th September 9.30am - 3pm (NOW FULLY BOOKED)

This ancient method of exposed stitch binding comes to us from Africa and is perfect for constructing a book that lends itself to contemporary purposes; journal, cookbook, photo album. Learn this effective technique to design books that are ideal for gift giving. Class is limited to 5 participants. Based on demand, additional classes may be offered. Bring a bag lunch.

Carousel Book Saturday 22nd November 9.30am - 3pm

Learn to make a five page spread carousel book. Also known as a star book, this book opens to a circular shape with 5 sides ('pages'). Each of the five side spreads open to reveal a 3-D theatre-like display. This structure lends itself well to holiday themes and makes a special gift for giving. Class is limited to 10 participants. Bring a bag lunch.

Cost: Members $75. Non-members $80. Includes materials. 

Our experience shows that all book making classes are booked out very fast. If there is no place for you, please ask us to put you on a waiting list as extra classes may be organised on a later date.

About the instructor of Books that Flip, Flop and Fold

Emily Hylard has been teaching book making to adults and youth for over ten years and has trained in the books arts through short courses and classes in the US at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Minneapolis, MN, the Centre for Book Arts, New York, NY and Columbia College Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts, Chicago, IL.

Locally Emily has taught book making to adults at Bellbird Place in Blackburn, Victorian Hand Papermakers' Guild in Box Hill, North Ferntree Gully Elementary School (teacher workshop) and in the City Library, Melbourne.
